Domestic object, Stewart Dawson and Co, Unknown
Wilfred Clarence Busse was born in Chiltern, Victoria in 1898. His family first arrived in this region during the gold rush era, purchasing a piece of land adjacent to the Murray River. The spectacular scenery and rich history of the area is said to have inspired Busse in his writing. He attended Wesley College in his school days, before going on to study law at the University of Melbourne. After graduating from university, Busse would go on to become a barrister, but he is best known as a writer of fiction, publishing two novels: 'The Blue Beyond: A Romance of the Early Days in South Eastern Australia' and 'The Golden Plague: A Romance in the Early Fifties'. Busse died in 1960. This particular object was owned by Busse. It is a tie pin and, as inscribed on its box, it was manufactured by Stewart Dawson and Co, a successful jewellery company - founded in Sydney in the late nineteenth century - that is still active today. This object is significant as it was owned by Wilfred Clarence Busse, an accomplished barrister and writer from Chiltern, Victoria. It was also manufactured by Stewart Dawson and Co, a successful jewellery company, founded in the nineteenth century, that is still active today. Silver Trophy Cup - Tarnagulla Cricket Club, 1911
The Tarnagulla and District Cricket Association existed for quite a few years in the 1890 -1920 period, and consisted of 6 to 8 clubs drawn from a radius of about 15 km. Tarnagulla Club finished on top of the ladder in the 1910/1911 season, and the club then won the grand final against Llanelly in April 1911. The trophy was presented to Edward Toole at the Club's annual presentation evening in December 1911. Mr Toole was the publican at the Golden Age Hotel at Tarnagulla for many years, and he was also a long-time president and strong supporter of the Tarnagulla Cricket Club. Mr Toole was unwell at that time, and the club's supporters decided to present it to him in recognition of his many years of service. N. Butcher resided at Llanelly and was a very keen local cricket lover. He donated this trophy for the 1910/11 season. The hallmark 'SD&Co' probably indicates the cup was made by Stewart Dawson & Co. which had Australian operations in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. David Gordon Collection. A large plated-silver cup with engraved decorations and inscription.Etched with flourishes and flower and leaf designs around text which reads "T.D.C.A Trophy, Presented by Mr. N. Jane's younger sister Catherine Shillinglaw was born 13 Nov 1852 at Coburg, Victoria. She married Edward Henry Bottle in 1897 This photo shows fashion and hairstyles typical of the later 1870s. The photo is estimated to have been taken c.1878 which would make Jane 32 years of age and Catherine 26 years. Possibly George Bird (1845-1920) prior to his marriage to Janet Kilpatrick in 1878. Photograph, Stewart & Co, Charles and Sarah (nee Shillinglaw) Aldous with either Florence May (1883) or Elizabeth Annie (1885) Aldous, c.1884-c.1887
Florence May Aldous was born 1883, her sister Elizabeth Annie was born 1 Nov. 1885 A duplicate image is contained in Album 2 (05664) Aldous family assumption was that the child was Elizabeth Annie. However upon further investigation with the original source of information written on back of a duplicate photo has confirmed in Annies hand it says “my mother and father”. Given that photo was handed down Elizabeth Annie's line, it is a reasonable presumption to have thought the child was Elizabeth Annie however it begs to question why her elder sister by two years is not in the photo. Hence it is thought the child is more likely to be Florence May. c.1885 Stewart & Co Photographers operated from various addresses in Bourke Street, Melbourne from 1871 through 1910. In this image Sarah appears young and has a wide wedding band on her left ring finger which dates it to after her marriage to Charles Aldous in June 1880. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ann Shillinglaw born August 15, 1879 at Bundoora, Victoria was the fith child of Phillip Shillinglaw and Sarah Ann (nee Kidd). She commenced school at Eltham State School No. 209 (Register No. 391) in 1883 at age 3 years, her final year being 1892. She was engaged to a local Eltham lad who enslisted in the First World War and presented her with a gold ring with Lizzie inscribed on it. He never returned from war and Lizzie never married. Lizzie was quite involved with the local Methodist church where father Phillip was a Lay Preacher. She also had a dress making business in Smitrh Street, Collingwood. At the time of her father's death in 1914 she was living at 18 Stanley Street, Richmond. She returned to Wattle Brae in Eltham where she and her unmarried sisters, Mary and Ada and brother Ernest Samuel continued to live. Mary Shillinglaw born November 5, 1880 at Bundoora, Victoria was the sixth child of Phillip Shillinglaw and Sarah Ann (nee Kidd). She commenced school at Eltham State School No. 209 (Register No. 423) in 1885 at age 4 years. Mary did not marry and spent most of her life at Wattle Brae (Shillinglaw Cottage). In his Will, Phillip Shillinglaw provided that any of his unwed sisters would be able to live at Wattle Brae, rent free. When Eltham Shire Council aquired the property in 1963 to build new Shire Offices, both Mary and her sister Lizzie (also unmarried) were still living at the cottage. Council paid for the women to relocate. Mary moved to Elizabeth House, a nursing home in Ivanhoe but found it very hard to adapt to her new surroundings and living condtions. She died there only a few months after departing Eltham on October 29, 1963 at age 83 years. Lizzie died June 28, 1972 at age 93 years."Mary Shillinglaw"marg ball collection, 1908, elizabeth (lizzie) ann shillinglaw (1879-1972), mary ann shillinglaw (1880-1963), stewart & co photographers bourke st melbourne -
